The Beginner’s Guide to Cleaning after Holidays

As soon as we start enjoying the holidays, we don’t even know how quickly they get over. Then it comes the time for you to remember all the parties, the guests, the merriment, and obviously the mess.

The Beginner’s Guide to Cleaning after Holidays

If you plan a post-holiday cleaning spree after hosting the family for the holidays, here are some tips to help you.

Start with Decluttering

During the holiday season, we often tend to accumulate stuff. Although giving gifts is great, finding your kitchen filled with used storage containers, storage areas stuffed with unwanted decorations, and trash bins full of waste is not always that great.

But throwing everything out the door doesn’t mean decluttering. It refers to preparing for warmer weather by lightening your load. Think lighter while decluttering –

  • Get rid of the trash that includes the wrapping paper, ribbons, and bows that are not needed.
  • Return old food containers, if any, and if not taken back, you can trash or donate them.
  • Store your tree, decorations, and other holiday items properly, and put them away 18 days after Christmas.
  • Finally, go through your home items quickly and assess if there’s anything you can donate or that needs to be thrown away. Since the new year is a time for rebirth, take the opportunity to declutter after the holidays.

Disinfect and Refresh Kitchen Appliances

Parties are over; you’ve cooked for guests and have baked cakes, pies, and cookies. Now it’s time to deep clean all your kitchen appliances. This includes –

  • The internal areas of your refrigerator and freezer
  • The external areas of your mixers and blenders
  • The exterior and interior of your dishwasher and oven
  • The sink, along with the under-sink area
  • The exterior and interior of your drawers and cabinets

You can use a disinfecting cleaner or a basic mix of vinegar, baking soda, and water. Scrub these surfaces down to avoid food stains.

Vacuum and Clean all Furniture and Upholstery

All your family members have been sitting on the furniture all winter. And, after hosting during the holidays, it’s time to clean your upholstery.

You must do this once or twice a year at minimum, and the post-holiday season is a great time to do it.
You can DIY by –

  • Vacuuming all the fabric furniture. This helps remove any errant dirt.
  • Spot clean any stains. Some of the long-lasting stains probably won’t come out, but you can try and remove some dirt beforehand.
  • Spraying with a mixture of essential oils and water. You can use diluted essential oils to freshen up fabrics and keep your living spaces smelling pleasant before cleaning them.

Of course, calling your furniture cleaning specialist is the best choice. They help remove stains and smells from your furniture and make it fresh for the upcoming spring.

Clean Out Your Area Rugs

Similar to your furniture, area rugs also accumulate stains, dirt, and odor. And you can clean them with a few at-home steps like your furniture.

A simple way you can do it is by letting them sit outside. For example, you can hang your rugs on a balcony after gently shaking them out on a warm day with no rain. This will help remove odor along with removing dust. After that, you can try cleaning the rug yourself if the rug is washable. However, cleaning and washing can be hard on your rug if you do not have the right equipment.

Deep Clean Your Carpets

Finally, clean that carpet by picking up all your furniture. It has suffered damage over the winter; long days with many people inside, parties, pets, muddy shoes, you name it. And you will be surprised to know how much carpet cleaning can freshen up your home.

You can book an appointment with NAP’s Maintenance if you have a mixture of area rugs, upholstered furniture, and carpeting to clean. Cleaning up everything on your own, too, without the right equipment, is quite hectic. You are already occupied with your busy schedule and have no time for this cleaning job, right?
